BBC is in a search of an Indian partner for the balance 74% stake. India stands second among six key focus countries for the BBC regional language expansion. Hindi news channel proposal which is likely to be a pay channel had been sent to London, sources said. The channel would be made available on both directto-home and conditional access system platforms. BBC has done an in-house research on the Hindi news market which reveals that there is definite scope for a 24-hour Hindi news channel for the Indian middle-class.
The company had approached consultants KPMG in July this year to suggest possible partners for the Hindi channel. KPMG recommended Reliance Industries, the Tata Group and Bharti as the best possible associates for the news channel. The suggested companies are not involved in the business of broadcasting at present. BBC World has finalized six languages for launching 24-hour news channel by 2012. BBC strategy include launch of an Arabic channel in 2007, Hindi and Urdu channels by 2008, Russian and Spanish channels between 2009and 2012. The Urdu channel will make its way in both Pakistan and India.
